Over the Edge Radio

Negativland

Over The Edge Radio Archive (Seeland 031). Negativland's live mix radio show "Over The Edge" has been the longest-running block of free-form audio collage in radio history. With Negativland's Don Joyce at the helm, the weekly show was broadcast from KPFA FM in Berkeley California from 1981 to 2015. His death on July 22, 2015 closed a very large and long chapter in the group's history.

This large collection of skits and bits from Bob and Ray shows fills three hours with a minimum amount of mixing. And speaking of 50s Mixmasters, this is a good example of stuff available on the internet only, if you can find it. It's being made available there and if it wasn't, neither would this compilation radio show ever hit the airwaves, I sure didn't have this stuff and never would have, so if you like Bob and Ray on your midnight radio, you can thank all the culturally smart free...

Yet another 5 hour edition, but at 3 AM, I'm joined by members of the Subgenius cult of believers in Bob to debate their misconceptions until 5 AM. Until then, and beginning with a correction to last week's Sci-Fi Aside feature, I cover the whole God concept with more Bible history, more philosophical interrogation, and even the astronomical view of space and it's potential for life. If we can get all the way to Christmas with this, we may finally put a stop to that misguided holiday for good.

I have already been summoned by KPFA to explain this program and why it doesn't follow the language rules of radio. Three solid hours of Eminem music and Eminem talk, some of it edited for language and some not, which in contrast certainly points out how language censorship mutilates the music of Eminem to ruination if nothing else. With constant reminders of this "parental guidance" format, we cover Eminem's career, the media controversy surrounding his emergence, the 2001 Grammy...

The soundtrack to Primary Colors, with most of the obscenities included, forms the basis for a dangerously nasty mix about the American political process. Various esoteric examples of pompously emotional patriotism and multiple ramblings by and about the professional advertisers and consultants who now run our voting circus all spin together towards an always bigger, always brighter future. The cynical manipulation of our most superficial emotions is now the only name of this endless game. It's...

Crosley Bendix begins this show with a declaration that, since art is dead, he is switching to philosophy and will review that from now on. He begins this new career by tackling natural evolution vs planned initiation. After that, the role of family and sex in anthropological pre-history is thrown on a space ship and taken to your radio. On the way, boy crazy teenaged girls sing about the attractions of fascination, anthropologists discuss the strange evolvement of both sex and birth in human...

Intermixing these recordings doesn't seem to hurt the intended surrealism a bit.

The children of Rock &Roll just fade away, except they don't, because here's what they did. Exclusively devoted to the Beatles verses Rolling Stones, chopped up and overlapped, with 60s commentary by both groups. This was an actual, musically dazed and confused issue of contention at the time. Mostly mixed with boots and takes of less familiar songs.

The comedian who changed comedy forever, Lenny Bruce fused social and political anxieties with amazingly perceptive reflection, improvising most of it in a rapid blaze of expletive laden language for which he was eventually hounded literally to death. Smoky dives, beatniks, jazz, and 50s60s hipness formed his environment, with the cops watching every move. By the end of his career, he was talking almost exclusively about his own legal problems which, while tedious to some at the time, now...

"Over the Edge" becomes "The Haunted Edge" as Don speaks from beyond the grave, electrocuted by a toaster, and offers "five hours to kill together". Blended together are stories by Poe, Lovecraft, Dickens, and a remarkably obscure sci-fi-horror work ("Cancrogregina") from the 1950s by Italian writer Tommaso Landolfi.
